Title: mm-absorption in AGNs
VLBI absorption lines studies allow to spatially locate and image the absorber in front of a bright and compact AGN-core, and by this test the Unified Scheme and hypothesis of a circum-nuclear torus. In particular, absorption lines at mm wavelengths enables us to investigate matter which surrounds the VLBI-core and inner jet on sub-pc scales. For more detailed and statistical studies on molecular absorption systems, we have conducted a new absorption line survey and sensitive VLBI observations in a well-selected sample of galaxies, for which circum-nuclear absorption is expected. This will help to clarify origins of the absorbing matter around AGNs and reveal physical properties of the putative molecular tori.
